The challenges posed by recycling wastewater from oil and gas wells

13.11.2015

Each year, the oil and gas industry produces more than 800 billion gallons of wastewater. Coupling massive volumes of waste generated over the life of the well and millions of gallons of water needed to hydraulically fracture each well, it is easy to see that the oil and gas exploration and production as well, the problem of water is the energy problem.

Huge amounts of waste and wastewater generated over the life of the well during oil and gas exploration and production. This waste volume contains hundreds of chemicals as a result of operations, as well as underground water.

On the one hand, it’s great. In drought-ridden areas, the water is a limited resource, and a huge amount of beneficial reuse of wastewater oil and gas industry produces can help mitigate the impact on local water sources.

However recycling of this wastewater creates certain environmental problems. In addition, if they are not actively addressed, we risk trading one environmental problem for the next ones.
